Young Adult Carers
Transitions Project
16 24 Year Olds

We are flexible in our approach, completely non-judgmental and are here to support young adult carers however they need us to.

There are 229,318 Young Adult Carers aged 16-24 in the UK and this is 5.3% of all people in that age group. One quarter of all Young Adult Carers in the UK (56,069 people) are providing care for more than 20 hours per week and almost 27,000 of these, (12% of the total) are providing care for more than 50 hours each week.

The term Young Adult Carer applies to anyone between 16 and 24 whose life is in some way restricted because of the need to take responsibility for the care of a person on a regular basis. They may be the main Carer, or provide partial care for a Brother, Sister, Mother, Father, Grandparent, Husband, Wife or Partner. The person being Cared for may have a long-term illness, a physical or sensory impairment, learning difficulties, mental illness or be affected by alcohol or substance misuse.

We can offer the following services:

One to One visits
A support worker can meet with you at your home, here at the centre, or in a mutually convenient place i.e. Coffee Shop. The aim is to provide you with information, support and a listening ear. We can meet with you and your family together or just you if you would prefer.

Support & Signposting
Where appropriate for us to do so, we can accompany Young Adult Carers to meetings and support them to get their views, needs and wishes across to other professionals. We can support Yong Adult Carers in completing paperwork and forms when applying for a place in further or higher education, job application forms, and benefit applications.

Join us at one of our monthly Drop Ins based in Colchester and Maldon. This is an opportunity to meet other Young Adults in a similar situation to yourself; improve your social skills by sharing experiences and ideas within the group, sit and relax, enjoy activities, make new friends, speak to your support worker about things that are happening in your life, that may be worrying or concerning you.
