Adult Carer Support - Introduction

A carer is someone, who, without payment, provides help and support to a partner, child, relative, friend or neighbour, who could not manage without their help. This could be due to age, physical or mental illness, addiction or disability.

We have Carer Support and Development Workers, a Hospital Link Worker supporting Carers across Essex. We support any Carer from the age of 18.

We offer the following services:

End of Life Service
We support carers who are caring for people who are terminally ill and are at the "end of life" stage.

Will offer practical help in making sure that a Carers rights and entitlements are upheld. Please see Advocacy page for more details.

Crisis Management
Each of our Carer Support and Development Workers offer one to one crisis management, where they will support the Carer and explore the Carer’s situation and ensure they have access to relevant benefits, housing and health services.

One to one visits
One of our Support Workers can meet with you at your home, here at the centre, at one of our outreach centres or in a mutually convenient place. The aim is to provide you with information, support and a listening ear.

Information Provision
Our Support Workers are incredibly talented at research and problems solving, and if it’s something that we are unable to help with we will do our best to signpost you to someone who can.

Emotional Support
Our Support Workers are on hand to provide emotional support and someone to talk to throughout office hours. If necessary we can refer into a professional counselling service.

Telephone Contact
If required one of our Support Workers or Volunteers will call regularly to provide support and a listening ear.

We aim to run a course for Carers in each area every quarter. Courses may include training in first aid, manual handling, medication, dementia awareness, stress management and relaxation.

Special Events
We host special events throughout the year, including Carers Week, Carers Rights Day and Christmas Parties, as well as a summer fete, a summer ball and other fundraising events.

Support Groups
Our Carer Support Groups and drop-ins are run by a Carer Support and Development Worker and these groups provide emotional support, information and advice for Carers in an informal environment. Caring can be very isolating and our Support Groups offer Carers some time out to talk to other Carers, share their experiences and support one another. There may be times when you want to talk to someone who understands the pressures of being a Carer or you may want practical advice or support to help you cope. Tea, coffee, biscuits and a friendly face will always be available for anyone who needs information, emotional or practical support, or simply feels the need to have a chat.

Within our Support Groups, we offer a variety of activities for Carers. These activities have included pottery painting, flower arranging, Pets as Therapy, Indian Head Massage and many more.

Individual Funding Opportunities
We have information on possible grant opportunities for Carers where a need is presented.
